Getting Started
Just got your RECAP? Here’s how to set it up.
- Check your phone connection — If your phone doesn’t have a headphone jack, you’ll need an adapter. See compatible adapters
- Recording to a computer? Check your audio input first. — RECAP sends each voice to a separate stereo channel (yours on one side, theirs on the other). This requires a stereo microphone input. Most laptops made after 2015 only have mono inputs and can’t capture both channels. Run our Audio Device Scanner to check — it takes 10 seconds, runs in your browser, and no data leaves your computer. If your input is mono, you’ll need a USB stereo audio adapter.

Troubleshooting
I can only hear one side of the call in my recording
The most common cause: your computer’s audio input is mono. RECAP sends each voice to a separate stereo channel — if your input only captures one channel, you’ll only hear one side. Run the Audio Device Scanner to check. If it shows mono, you need a USB stereo audio adapter. If your input is stereo, check that RECAP’s CALL plug is in your phone’s headphone jack (not a HEADSET jack), and that your Lightning or USB-C adapter supports microphone passthrough.
The recording volume is too low
Turn up your phone’s call volume during the call. Also check your recording software’s input level — see our microphone volume guide. If you’re on a Mac, also run the Audio Device Scanner and check whether auto gain control or noise suppression is active on your input — these can reduce volume.
There’s buzzing or static in the recording
Usually caused by a ground loop or a low-quality adapter. Try disconnecting the phone charger during recording. If using a USB-C or Lightning adapter, try a different one from our tested list. The Audio Device Scanner can also flag audio processing features (echo cancellation, noise suppression) that sometimes introduce artifacts.
My computer doesn’t detect RECAP as an audio input
Run the Audio Device Scanner to see all audio inputs your computer recognizes. If RECAP doesn’t appear, check your cable connections and try a different USB port. On Mac, also check System Settings > Sound > Input to make sure the right device is selected.
My phone doesn’t have a headphone jack
You need a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter (iPhone) or USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter (Android). Not all adapters work — see our compatible adapters guide.
Does RECAP work with Bluetooth headsets?
No. RECAP requires a wired connection. The headset plugs into RECAP’s HEADSET port, and RECAP plugs into your phone’s headphone jack (or adapter).
Can I use RECAP with a landline?
RECAP is designed for cell phones. For landline recording, you need a different type of adapter (telephone recording adapter).
